The Society
The Arab Intellectual Property Mediation and Arbitration Society (AIPMAS) was established under the name of the Arab Society for Protecting Industrial Property on May 31, 1987 in accordance with the provisions of the Social Societies and Commissions No. 33 for 1966, and the modified law No. 9 for 1971, as a Jordanian Society with public profit.
The Society was established with support from the Arab Society for the Protection of Industrial property (Munich, Germany), which is the “Original Society” under whose umbrella the activities and events of the Society are carried out.
The Society aims at promoting and reinforcing the system of intellectual property in Jordan, and enhancing competence and knowledge of the personnel working in this field, in addition to the activities of the Center of Mediation and Arbitration, belonging to the Society, which resolves conflicts of intellectual property through international arbitrators applying international rules.
Historical Synopsis
The establishment of the Arab Intellectual Property Mediation and Arbitration Society was officially declared in the meeting held on February 23, 1987 in Munich, with the presence of a large number of people concerned with the practice and the protection of trademarks, patents, and industrial property, such as university professors, professionals and representatives of some government departments. 140 representatives signed the procedures of the establishment of the Society, and 40 representatives were elected to the Board of Directors of the Society. One of the first objectives of the Arab Intellectual Property Mediation and Arbitration Society was to support the establishment of national societies in the Arab countries, in accordance with the laws in each country. Some of the most important activities of these societies are spreading awareness and explaining the importance and the dimensions of the industrial property, and seeking solutions for conflicts derived from it, and developing its laws and rules at the local and the international levels. In accordance with the objective and on May 31, 1987 the Arab Society for the Protection of Industrial property was established and had its center in Amman, Jordan. A group of specialists and concerned people practicing activities related to industrial property for the purpose of operating on the development of the profession and enhancing its level joined the Society.
The Society was modifies in form several times; the name of the Society was modified and therefore the internal system in 1997, and its name became “The Arab Society for Protecting Intellectual Property/Jordan”, which meant expanding its activities to include all branches of intellectual property.
With the development of work in the Society, especially when protecting the intellectual property is no longer the sole objective of the Society, it was found out that it was appropriate to make another modification of the name, and this was done in 2001, when the name became “The Arab Society for Intellectual Property/Jordan”. Because resolution of conflicts in intellectual property is considered one of the objectives of the Society, it was decided to focus on this activity, and the final modification in 2003 was done, when the name became The Arab Intellectual Property Mediation and Arbitration Society, and the original system was modified to include in its objectives the establishment of a Center for Arbitration and Mediation in Intellectual Property.
Objectives of the Society
The principal objective of the Society is to reinforce and develop the systems of protecting intellectual property through the means available for education and awareness, which explains the nature of this system and its role affecting the local and the international economy. In addition, the Society establisheda Center for Mediation and Arbitration in Intellectual Property, with competent jurisdiction in resolving conflicts of rights of different kinds at the local and regional levels.
Furthermore, one of the objectives of the Society is enhancing and unifying the legislation of Arab countries in the field of intellectual property and achieving that through studying the various sides of patents, trademarks, and the industrial models to describe its basics and effects and suggesting the fundamental principles to put them in the form of unified laws and legislation for the Arab countries, and suggesting striking international treaties in coordination among the Arab countries, in addition to the professional training for the Arab staff in the field of intellectual property as a basic principal objective of the Society.
